A diaper fastening system for releasably securing first and second longitudinal ends of a diaper has been patented. The fastening system includes tab and landing members respectively mounted to the first and second longitudinal ends of the diaper. The tab member has a mounting portion, a connecting portion and a securement portion. The tab member is foldable to a Z-shape in a storage position and is deployable to a securement position to provide combined mechanical and adhesive securement with the landing member. The tab member includes a facestock member with opposed inner and outer facestock surfaces as well as an adhesive layer with opposed inner and outer adhesive surfaces. The adhesive layer extends continuously along the facestock member adjacent to the mounting, connecting and securement portions of the tab member. The inner adhesive surface is adjacent to the inner facestock surface. A first release coating extends continuously along the outer adhesive surface adjacent to the connecting portion. A second release coating extends continuously along the entire width and length of the outer facestock surface adjacent to the mounting, connecting and securement portions of the tab member. Mechanical fastening elements project from the outer adhesive surface adjacent to the securement portion. The mounting portion is folded toward the connecting portion. The outer adhesive surface adjacent to the mounting portion is secured to the first longitudinal diaper end. The securement portion is folded toward the first release coating and the connecting portion when the tab member is folded in a storage position. The securement portion is unfolded away from the first release coating to expose the outer adhesive surface and mechanical fastening elements adjacent to the securement portion upon deployment of the tab member to the securement position. The landing member includes contact surface means for adhesive engagement by the outer adhesive surface adjacent to the securement portion. The landing member provides immediate tack strength while mechanical engaging means for mechanical locking engagement by the mechanical fastening elements provide shear strength. The tab member and the landing member in a securement position provide combined adhesive and mechanical securement between the tab and landing members.
